Register of Solar Water Heaters/Heat Pumps and Postcode Zones

Please note that there are changes coming soon to post code zones for heat pumps. Visit the Changes to air source heat pump postcode zones and STC entitlements latest update for more information.

The Register of Solar Water Heaters is a list of the solar water heaters and heat pumps that are eligible for the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

As required by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001, the Register of solar water heaters contains information about each solar water heater/heat pump model for which small-scale technology certificates (STCs) may be created. The number of STCs a particular solar water heater/heat pump model is entitled to create will depend on its installation date and geographic location identified through its postcode.

Please note that a retrofitted unit is usually not eligible for listing in the Register and so is not eligible for STCs. If you would like to get a new brand or model listed on the register please see the Manufacturers page for more information.

How to determine how many STCs your solar water heater/heat pump is entitled to

NOTE: If you are an owner of a solar water heater it's important to note that a majority of owners assign their STCs to an agent who will determine the number of STCs you are entitled to. Assignment is in exchange for a financial benefit such as a delayed cash payment or discount on your solar water heater/heat pump. For information about assignment visit Installing your Solar Water Heater/Heat Pump

  1. Find your postcode zone
  2. Download the appropriate Register of solar water heaters/heat pump document from the list above.
  3. Locate the entry/entries for your particular solar water heater/heat pump model. You must enter the exact model name.
  4. Check the installation date - if the installation date of your solar water heater/heat pump model is within one of the eligible installation periods, proceed to the next step.
If not, your solar water heater/heat pump is not eligible for any STCs at this time.
  5. Match the postcode zone to your solar water heater/heat pump model.
The number of STCs you are entitled is listed in the column underneath your postcode zone.

About the documents

As required by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001, the Register of solar water heaters/heat pumps contains information about each solar water heater and heat pump model for which STCs may be created. The number of STCs a particular model is entitled to create will depend on its installation date and geographic location identified through its postcode. The Register contains the following details about each model:

  • Brand and Model name - the model names used in the Register are typically the manufacturing/engineering model names, which often differ from the commonly used marketing model name. If you are unable to find a particular model in the Register, it may be best to contact the manufacturer or retailer of the solar water heater/heat pump to find out whether the model is listed in the Register and the exact model name used.

Note that retrofit kits - to turn non-solar units into solar water heaters - are not listed in the Register and therefore retrofitted units are probably not eligible for STCs. Please see the Manufacturers page for information about getting your unit listed in the Register.

  • Number of STCs that may be created in each zone - the Regulator has determined four installation zones in Australia based on climate and solar radiation levels. Each zone is defined by reference to the postcodes contained within it.
  • Installation periods in which STCs may be created - STCs may only be created for a solar water heater/heat pump if it is installed between, or on, the 'Eligible From' and 'Eligible To' dates listed for the particular model in the Register. The Register of solar water heaters/heat pumps has been divided into two lists based on tank size: those models with a capacity of up to and including 700L, which typically includes domestic models; and those models with a capacity of more than 700L, which typically includes commercial models.
